The Elliot Lake Aquatic Club took 6 of their young swimmers to compete in the North Bay Y Invitational meet Feb 17-18. The six swimmers ranged in age from 8 to 11 and were all girls.
The swim meet was a little different than most as the older kids could choose from the sprint races or the ironman races. The latter consists of 1500 meter freestyle, 400 meter individual medley (all four strokes). 400 meter freestyle, 200 meter fly and 50 meter freestyle.
ELAC had one young lady, Avery Stirling, who decided to compete in the ironman and ended up winning high points trophy for the 11 & 12 yr old girls. The rest of the swimmers competed in the sprint races and all had personal best times in at least one event.
Abbie McGonegal came in a close second place for the highpoint 10 & under girls. Abbie won the 25 meter free, 100 meter free, 100 I.M., and 100 meter fee. She came in second in 100 meter back, and third in 50 meter free, 25 meter back, 50 meter breast and 100 meter breaststroke.
Reilly McGonegal, age 8, had two 3rd place finishes, a 4th, and two 5ths, a 6th and a 9th place finish in her events.
Sydney Abercrombie, age 10, finished 5th place in 7 of her races and 4th place in her other race.
Lauren Sams competed in 7 individual events bettering her time in 6 of her races. She also helped her relay teams to win a second place finish.
Jordan Stirling, age 9, had two second place finishes, 2 third place finishes and a 4th place finish. She was a member of the girls 10 & under relay that took the gold in the 200 medley relay and was part of 3 other relays that came in second.
ELAC combined all their points and in the end won High Points For small team club. Way to Go ELAC!
It was a lot of fun watching the kids swim fast and having a great time. ELAC will compete again at the end of March in Sudbury. This meet will be held in the longer 50 meter pool which is always a challenge for our swimmers since we only train in a 24 meter pool.
